RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess the hepatic disease-free survival (HDFS) and overall survival (OS) of patients who underwent resection of colorectal cancer liver metastases (CRCLM) in our population, and evaluate what factors are associated with these outcomes. METHODS: Patients with resected non-mucinous CRCLM between January 2013-February 2020 were retrospectively identified. Dates of diagnosis, surgery, and, if applicable, death were recorded. HDFS and OS were calculated using a census date of 24 September 2022. Separate Cox multivariate regression analyses were performed to evaluate for association between HDFS and OS and the following factors: pre-operative imaging interval (<4 weeks vs. ≥4 weeks); pre-operative imaging modality (CT only vs. MRI+CT); extrahepatic disease at time of hepatectomy (yes vs. no); tumor burden score (TBS, where TBS2 = (largest axial dimension of CRCLM)2 + (number of CRCLM)2); pT and pN; and neoadjuvant chemotherapy. RESULTS: 137 subjects (mean age, 61 ± 11 years, 86 males) were included. Associations with recurrent hepatic disease were found with chemotherapy (HR 2.11[95 % CI = 1.13-3.92]), TBS (HR 1.30[95 % CI = 1.17-1.45]), MRI+CT (HR 2.12[95 % CI = 1.29-3.48]), and extrahepatic disease at hepatectomy (HR 2.16[95 % CI = 1.08-4.35]). For mortality, associations were found with TBS (HR 1.22[95 % CI = 1.09-1.37]), pT (HR 1.45[95 % CI = 1.05-2.00]), and extrahepatic disease at hepatectomy (HR 2.10[95 % CI = 1.31-3.36]). CONCLUSION: In our population, non-imaging related factors TBS, neoadjuvant chemotherapy, pT and presence of extrahepatic disease at time of hepatectomy were associated with HDFS and/or OS. The preoperative imaging interval and use of preoperative MRI were not associated with improved patient outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Commissioning, calibration, and quality control procedures for nuclear medicine imaging systems are typically performed using hollow containers filled with radionuclide solutions. This leads to multiple sources of uncertainty, many of which can be overcome by using traceable, sealed, long-lived surrogate sources containing a radionuclide of comparable energies and emission probabilities. This study presents the results of a quantitative SPECT/CT imaging comparison exercise performed within the MRTDosimetry consortium to assess the feasibility of using 133Ba as a surrogate for 131I imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two sets of four traceable 133Ba sources were produced at two National Metrology Institutes and encapsulated in 3D-printed cylinders (volume range 1.68-107.4 mL). Corresponding hollow cylinders to be filled with liquid 131I and a mounting baseplate for repeatable positioning within a Jaszczak phantom were also produced. A quantitative SPECT/CT imaging comparison exercise was conducted between seven members of the consortium (eight SPECT/CT systems from two major vendors) based on a standardised protocol. Each site had to perform three measurements with the two sets of 133Ba sources and liquid 131I. RESULTS: As anticipated, the 131I pseudo-image calibration factors (cps/MBq) were higher than those for 133Ba for all reconstructions and systems. A site-specific cross-calibration reduced the performance differences between both radionuclides with respect to a cross-calibration based on the ratio of emission probabilities from a median of 12-1.5%. The site-specific cross-calibration method also showed agreement between 133Ba and 131I for all cylinder volumes, which highlights the potential use of 133Ba sources to calculate recovery coefficients for partial volume correction. CONCLUSION: This comparison exercise demonstrated that traceable solid 133Ba sources can be used as surrogate for liquid 131I imaging. The use of solid surrogate sources could solve the radiation protection problem inherent in the preparation of phantoms with 131I liquid activity solutions as well as reduce the measurement uncertainties in the activity. This is particularly relevant for stability measurements, which have to be carried out at regular intervals.

BACKGROUND: Monte Carlo (MC) simulations are used in nuclear medicine imaging as they provide unparalleled insight into processes that are not directly experimentally measurable, such as scatter and attenuation in an acquisition. Whilst MC is often used to provide a 'ground-truth', this is only the case if the simulation is fully validated against experimental data. This work presents a quantitative validation for a MC simulation of a single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) system. METHODS: An MC simulation model of the Mediso AnyScan SCP SPECT system installed at the UK National Physical Laboratory was developed in the GATE (Geant4 Application for Tomographic Emission) toolkit. Components of the detector head and two collimator configurations were modelled according to technical specifications and physical measurements. Experimental detection efficiency measurements were collected for a range of energies, permitting an energy-dependent intrinsic camera efficiency correction function to be determined and applied to the simulation on an event-by-event basis. Experimental data were collected in a range of geometries with [Formula: see text]Tc for comparison to simulation. The procedure was then repeated with [Formula: see text]Lu to determine how the validation extended to another isotope and set of collimators. RESULTS: The simulation's spatial resolution, sensitivity, energy spectra and the projection images were compared with experimental measurements. The simulation and experimental uncertainties were determined and propagated to all calculations, permitting the quantitative agreement between simulated and experimental SPECT acquisitions to be determined. Statistical agreement was seen in sinograms and projection images of both [Formula: see text]Tc and [Formula: see text]Lu data. Average simulated and experimental sensitivity ratios of ([Formula: see text]) were seen for emission and scatter windows of [Formula: see text]Tc, and ([Formula: see text]) and ([Formula: see text]) for the 113 and 208 keV emissions of [Formula: see text]Lu, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: MC simulations will always be an approximation of a physical system and the level of agreement should be assessed. A validation method is presented to quantify the level of agreement between a simulation model and a physical SPECT system.

OBJECTIVES: With disease-modifying therapies in development for neurological disorders, quantitative brain imaging techniques become increasingly relevant for objective early diagnosis and assessment of response to treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of Brain SPECT and PET scans in the UK and explore drivers and barriers to using quantitative analysis through an online survey. METHODS: A web-based survey with 27 questions was used to capture a snapshot of brain imaging in the UK. The survey included multiple-choice questions assessing the availability and use of quantification for DaTscan, Perfusion SPECT, FDG PET and Amyloid PET. The survey results were reviewed and interpreted by a panel of imaging experts. RESULTS: Forty-six unique responses were collected and analysed, with 84% of responses from brain imaging sites. Within these sites, 88% perform DaTscan, 50% Perfusion SPECT, 48% FDG PET, and 33% Amyloid PET, while a few sites use other PET tracers. Quantitative Brain analysis is used in 86% of sites performing DaTscans, 40% for Perfusion SPECT, 63% for FDG PET and 42% for Amyloid PET. Commercial tools are used more frequently than in-house software. CONCLUSION: The survey showed variations across the UK, with high availability of DaTscan imaging and quantification and lower availability of other SPECT and PET scans. The main drivers for quantification were improved reporting confidence and diagnostic accuracy, while the main barriers were a perception of a need for an appropriate database of healthy controls and a lack of training, time, and software availability.

PURPOSE: Nuclear medicine imaging modalities like computed tomography (CT), single photon emission CT (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET) are employed in the field of theranostics to estimate and plan the dose delivered to tumors and the surrounding tissues and to monitor the effect of the therapy. However, therapeutic radionuclides often provide poor images, which translate to inaccurate treatment planning and inadequate monitoring images. Multimodality information can be exploited in the reconstruction to enhance image quality. Triple modality PET/SPECT/CT scanners are particularly useful in this context due to the easier registration process between images. In this study, we propose to include PET, SPECT and CT information in the reconstruction of PET data. The method is applied to Yttrium-90 ([Formula: see text]Y) data. METHODS: Data from a NEMA phantom filled with [Formula: see text]Y were used for validation. PET, SPECT and CT data from 10 patients treated with Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) were used. Different combinations of prior images using the Hybrid kernelized expectation maximization were investigated in terms of VOI activity and noise suppression. RESULTS: Our results show that triple modality PET reconstruction provides significantly higher uptake when compared to the method used as standard in the hospital and OSEM. In particular, using CT-guided SPECT images, as guiding information in the PET reconstruction significantly increases uptake quantification on tumoral lesions. CONCLUSION: This work proposes the first triple modality reconstruction method and demonstrates up to 69% lesion uptake increase over standard methods with SIRT [Formula: see text]Y patient data. Promising results are expected for other radionuclide combination used in theranostic applications using PET and SPECT.

BACKGROUND: Selective internal radiation therapy with Yttrium-90 microspheres is an effective therapy for liver cancer and liver metastases. Yttrium-90 is mainly a high-energy beta particle emitter. These beta particles emit Bremsstrahlung radiation during their interaction with tissue making post-therapy imaging of the radioactivity distribution feasible. Nevertheless, image quality and quantification is difficult due to the continuous energy spectrum which makes resolution modelling, attenuation and scatter estimation challenging and therefore the dosimetry quantification is inaccurate. As a consequence a reconstruction algorithm able to improve resolution could be beneficial. METHODS: In this study, the hybrid kernelised expectation maximisation (HKEM) is used to improve resolution and contrast and reduce noise, in addition a modified HKEM called frozen HKEM (FHKEM) is investigated to further reduce noise. The iterative part of the FHKEM kernel was frozen at the 72nd sub-iteration. When using ordered subsets algorithms the data is divided in smaller subsets and the smallest algorithm iterative step is called sub-iteration. A NEMA phantom with spherical inserts was used for the optimisation and validation of the algorithm, and data from 5 patients treated with Selective internal radiation therapy were used as proof of clinical relevance of the method. RESULTS: The results suggest a maximum improvement of 56% for region of interest mean recovery coefficient at fixed coefficient of variation and better identification of the hot volumes in the NEMA phantom. Similar improvements were achieved with patient data, showing 47% mean value improvement over the gold standard used in hospitals. CONCLUSIONS: Such quantitative improvements could facilitate improved dosimetry calculations with SPECT when treating patients with Selective internal radiation therapy, as well as provide a more visible position of the cancerous lesions in the liver.

Interest in targeted cancer therapy with alpha-emitting radionuclides is growing. To evaluate emerging radiotherapeutic agents requires precise activity measurements for consistent dose-response relationships and patient-specific dosimetry. National metrology institutes around the world have reported on the development and comparison of activity standards for medically important alpha emitters. This review describes the relevant methods and models underpinning these standards, the generation of new nuclear decay data, and the impacts on preclinical and clinical activity assays using radionuclide calibrators and γ-ray spectrometry.

In Myocardial Perfusion Imaging (MPI) with Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) systems, accurate quantification is essential. We assessed flow quantification accuracy over various injected activities using a flow phantom. METHODS: The study was performed on the digital 4-ring Discovery MI (DMI-20) and analog Discovery 690 (D690) PET/CT systems, using 325-1257 MBq of [15O]H2O. PET performance and flow quantification accuracy were assessed in terms of count-rates, dead-time factors (DTF), scatter fractions (SF), time-activity curves (TACs), areas-under-the-curves (AUCs) and flow values. RESULTS: On DMI-20, prompts of 12.8 Mcps, DTF of 2.06 and SF of 46.1% were measured with 1257 MBq of activity. On the D690, prompts of 6.85 Mcps, DTF of 1.57 and SF of 32.5% were measured with 1230 MBq of activity. AUC values were linear over all activities. Mean wash-in flow error was - 9% for both systems whereas wash-out flow error was - 5% and - 6% for DMI-20 and D690. With the highest activity, wash-out flow error was - 12% and - 7% for the DMI-20 and D690. CONCLUSION: DMI-20 and D690 preserved accurate flow quantification over all injected activities, with maximum error of - 12%. In the future, flow quantification accuracy over the activities and count-rates evaluated in this study should be assessed.

OBJECTIVES: To construct and evaluate a 64Cu production system that minimises the amount of costly 64Ni, radionuclidic impurities and nonradioactive metal contamination and maximises radiochemical and radionuclidic purity and molar activity; and to report analytical and quality control methods that can be used within typical PET radiochemistry production facilities to measure metal ion concentrations and radiometal molar activities. METHODS: Low volume was ensured by dissolving the irradiated nickel in a low volume of hydrochloric acid (<1 mL) using the concave gold target backing as a reaction vessel in a custom-built target holder. Removal of contaminating 55Co and nonradioactive trace metals was ensured by adding an intermediate hydrochloric acid concentration step during the conventional ion-exchange elution process. The radionuclidic purity of the product was determined by half-life measurements, gamma spectroscopy and ion radiochromatography. Trace metal contamination and molar activity were determined by ion chromatography. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: On a small scale, suitable for preclinical research, the process produced typically 3.2 GBq 64Cu in 2 mL solution from 9.4 ± 2.1 mg nickel-64 electroplated onto a gold target backing. The product had high molar activity (121.5 GBq/µmol), was free of trace metal contamination detectable by ion chromatography and has been used for many preclinical and clinical PET imaging applications.

PURPOSE: Patient-specific dosimetry is required to ensure the safety of molecular radiotherapy and to predict response. Dosimetry involves several steps, the first of which is the determination of the activity of the radiopharmaceutical taken up by an organ/lesion over time. As uncertainties propagate along each of the subsequent steps (integration of the time-activity curve, absorbed dose calculation), establishing a reliable activity quantification is essential. The MRTDosimetry project was a European initiative to bring together expertise in metrology and nuclear medicine research, with one main goal of standardizing quantitative 177Lu SPECT/CT imaging based on a calibration protocol developed and tested in a multicentre inter-comparison. This study presents the setup and results of this comparison exercise. METHODS: The inter-comparison included nine SPECT/CT systems. Each site performed a set of three measurements with the same setup (system, acquisition and reconstruction): (1) Determination of an image calibration for conversion from counts to activity concentration (large cylinder phantom), (2) determination of recovery coefficients for partial volume correction (IEC NEMA PET body phantom with sphere inserts), (3) validation of the established quantitative imaging setup using a 3D printed two-organ phantom (ICRP110-based kidney and spleen). In contrast to previous efforts, traceability of the activity measurement was required for each participant, and all participants were asked to calculate uncertainties for their SPECT-based activities. RESULTS: Similar combinations of imaging system and reconstruction lead to similar image calibration factors. The activity ratio results of the anthropomorphic phantom validation demonstrate significant harmonization of quantitative imaging performance between the sites with all sites falling within one standard deviation of the mean values for all inserts. Activity recovery was underestimated for total kidney, spleen, and kidney cortex, while it was overestimated for the medulla. CONCLUSION: This international comparison exercise demonstrates that harmonization of quantitative SPECT/CT is feasible when following very specific instructions of a dedicated calibration protocol, as developed within the MRTDosimetry project. While quantitative imaging performance demonstrates significant harmonization, an over- and underestimation of the activity recovery highlights the limitations of any partial volume correction in the presence of spill-in and spill-out between two adjacent volumes of interests.

Acute appendicitis is the most common disease of the appendix. However, the differential diagnosis for an abnormal appendix includes other conditions that often present with symptoms and imaging features that overlap with acute appendicitis. In this pictorial essay, we review the normal anatomy of the appendix and outline the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, and imaging findings that are characteristic of acute appendicitis and other less common appendiceal abnormalities. Inflammatory/non-neoplastic processes including appendiceal diverticulitis, stump appendicitis, foreign body appendicitis, Crohn's appendicitis, and appendiceal hernias are discussed. Neoplastic considerations include appendiceal neuroendocrine tumors, mucinous and non-mucinous (colonic type) epithelial neoplasms, and lymphoma. It is important for the radiologist to be able to differentiate these alternative diagnoses for the purpose of directing appropriate patient management.

OBJECTIVES: Radiology Interest Groups (RIGs) are valuable for medical students and the radiology profession. The purpose of this study is to identify key components of a successful RIG and to discuss how to optimize available resources to increase student engagement in radiology. METHODS: Anonymous feedback forms (n = 478) completed by preclinical medical students attending 20 RIG events between September 2016 and May 2019 were analyzed. A five-point Likert-type scale was used to determine event effectiveness, and important themes reflecting student perspectives were identified using thematic analysis of freeform comments. RESULTS: Based on Likert feedback, 75% to 78% of students had a positive experience of RIG events and believed sessions were relevant to their studies. 31% to 42% of students believed these events increased their interest or insight into radiology and influenced their career choice. Four representative themes were identified by qualitative analysis of written feedback: engagement, professional development, mentorship, and suggestions for improvement. These themes provided insight into student perspectives of our RIG, and, along with experience from the RIG organizers, the authors present elements perceived to have contributed to these positive results. CONCLUSION: Thematic analysis of feedback reveals that students consider interactive events, contribution to professional development, and the opportunity for mentorship valuable elements of a RIG. From the perspective of the organizing committee, we embody these aspects through careful planning, innovative events, and consistent debriefing. In this way, our RIG promotes the future of the radiology profession and serves as a practical model for other similar organizations.

PURPOSE: The current study evaluated the prevalence of urologic disease among patients with hematuria referred for computerized tomography (CT) urography to determine which patients require investigation with CT urography. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed radiology reports of 1046 CT urograms performed for the indication of microscopic (43.7%) or gross hematuria (56.3%). Urological findings were categorized as negative, benign, or suspicious (pathologically confirmed) for malignancy. RESULTS: Of 1046 CT urograms performed, 53.5% were negative, 36.4% were benign, and 10% were suspicious for malignancy. The most common benign finding was urolithiasis (22.3%). Overall, urinary tract malignancies were present in 3.6% of patients, and the rate was significantly higher (P < .001) for gross (5.8%) than microscopic hematuria (0.9%). CT urography identified 0.6% patients with upper urinary tract malignancies; the malignancy rate was significantly higher (P = .038) for gross (1%) than microscopic hematuria (0%), and no significant sex (P = 1.00; male = 0.6%, female = 0.6%) or age (P = .600; < 50 years = 0%, ≥ 50 years = 0.7%) differences were observed. Logistic regression revealed that being male was associated with gross hematuria (odds ratio [OR] = 2.92), and that both age and gross hematuria (ORs = 1.06 and 5.13, respectively) were associated with malignancy. CONCLUSIONS: CT urography found no upper urinary tract malignancies in 99.4% of patients presenting with hematuria, including all patients with microscopic hematuria and those with gross hematuria <50 years old. Investigating these subgroups with CT urography may be unnecessary and result in increased patient morbidity and health-care costs.

Despite a growth in molecular radiotherapy treatment (MRT) and an increase in interest, centres still rarely perform MRT dosimetry. The aims of this report were to assess the main reasons why centres are not performing MRT dosimetry and provide advice on the resources required to set-up such a service. A survey based in the United Kingdom was developed to establish how many centres provide an MRT dosimetry service and the main reasons why it is not commonly performed. Twenty-eight per cent of the centres who responded to the survey performed some form of dosimetry, with 88% of those centres performing internal dosimetry. The survey showed that a 'lack of clinical evidence', a 'lack of guidelines' and 'not current UK practice' were the largest obstacles to setting up an MRT dosimetry service. More practical considerations, such as 'lack of software' and 'lack of staff training/expertise', were considered to be of lower significance by the respondents. Following on from the survey, this report gives an overview of the current guidelines, and the evidence available demonstrating the benefits of performing MRT dosimetry. The resources required to perform such techniques are detailed with reference to guidelines, training resources and currently available software. It is hoped that the information presented in this report will allow MRT dosimetry to be performed more frequently and in more centres, both in routine clinical practice and in multicentre trials. Such trials are required to harmonise dosimetry techniques between centres, build on the current evidence base, and provide the data necessary to establish the dose-response relationship for MRT.

RESUMO

An absolute standardisation of 89Zr was performed alongside determination of gamma emission intensities and half-life. The collected data were evaluated alongside complementary works from previous publications and new recommended nuclear data values are presented including a new evaluated T1/2 = 78.361(25) h and new absolute intensities for gamma transitions resulting from its decay to 89Y. Dial settings for commercially available radionuclide calibrators are also presented and show a relative difference of approximately 3% compared to previously published values.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to characterize national variation in radionuclide calibrator activity response to a single National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) traceable reference Ge source used as a surrogate for F at clinical PET centres in England using National Physical Laboratory approved techniques. METHODS: Readings from 20 instruments at 13 centres using local F and Ge factor settings were recorded with the source located in vial and syringe positions. Ten repeat measurements were conducted to investigate repeatability using % coefficient of variability (COV). Comparison ratios to investigate accuracy were made between calibrator responses and decay-corrected NISTref reference activity for syringe and vial position measurements. RESULTS: The maximum %COV was 0.79%, while 90, 95 and 80% of calibrators conformed to 5% accuracy for F syringe, Ge syringe and Ge vial position readings, respectively. We revealed a trend towards reduced bias in measurements using Veenstra devices for F and using Capintec devices for Ge factor settings. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated good repeatability in local device measurements. In total, 70% of English calibrators tested and 88% of all measurements performed achieved 5% accuracy. While statistically significant bias was exhibited between different vendor equipment dependent upon radioisotope selected, our study recommends regular traceability checks for optimum instrument performance conducted within National Metrology Institutes guidelines.

RESUMO

The SEL-I-METRY trial (EudraCT No 2015-002269-47) is the first multicentre trial to investigate the role of 123I and 131I SPECT/CT-based tumour dosimetry to predict response to radioiodine therapy. Standardised dosimetry methodology is essential to provide a robust evidence-base for absorbed dose-response thresholds for molecular radiotherapy (MRT). In this paper a practical standardised protocol is used to establish the first network of centres with consistent methods of radioiodine activity quantification. Nine SPECT/CT systems at eight centres were set-up for quantitative radioiodine imaging. The dead-time of the systems was characterised for up to 2.8 GBq 131I. Volume dependent calibration factors were measured on centrally reconstructed images of 123I and 131I in six (0.8-196 ml) cylinders. Validation of image quantification using these calibration factors was performed on three systems, by imaging a 3D-printed phantom mimicking a patient's activity distribution. The percentage differences between the activities measured in the SPECT/CT image and those measured by the radionuclide calibrator were calculated. Additionally uncertainties on the SPECT/CT-based activities were calculated to indicate the limit on the quantitative accuracy of this method. For systems set-up to image high 131I count rates, the count rate versus activity did not peak below 2.8 GBq and fit a non-paralysable model. The dead-times and volume-dependent calibration factors were comparable between systems of the same model and crystal thickness. Therefore a global calibration curve could be fitted to each. The errors on the validation phantom activities' were comparable to the measurement uncertainties derived from uncertainty analysis, at 10% and 16% on average for 123I and 131I respectively in a 5 cm sphere. In conclusion, the dead-time and calibration factors varied between centres, with different models of system. However, global calibration factors may be applied to the same system model with the same crystal thickness, to simplify set-up of future multi-centre MRT studies.

BACKGROUND: Intercostal artery aneurysms are rare vascular abnormalities that are typically diagnosed following rupture in patients with predisposing conditions. Our report is the first to document a patient with unruptured intercostal artery aneurysms in the absence of any associated disease. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old male with prostatic adenocarcinoma was incidentally discovered to have multiple unruptured aneurysms of his intercostal arteries. Three of the aneurysms were embolized utilizing microcoils and glue. At six-month follow-up the patient remained asymptomatic. CONCLUSION: We demonstrate successful endovascular management of a unique case of multiple idiopathic unruptured intercostal artery aneurysms. Appropriate diagnosis and prompt treatment of these rare vascular lesions is essential in preventing the potentially catastrophic consequences of rupture.

BACKGROUND: This inter-comparison exercise was performed to demonstrate the variability of quantitative SPECT/CT imaging for lutetium-177 (177Lu) in current clinical practice. Our aim was to assess the feasibility of using international inter-comparison exercises as a means to ensure consistency between clinical sites whilst enabling the sites to use their own choice of quantitative imaging protocols, specific to their systems. Dual-compartment concentric spherical sources of accurately known activity concentrations were prepared and sent to seven European clinical sites. The site staff were not aware of the true volumes or activity within the sources-they performed SPECT/CT imaging of the source, positioned within a water-filled phantom, using their own choice of parameters and reported their estimate of the activities within the source. RESULTS: The volumes reported by the participants for the inner section of the source were all within 29% of the true value and within 60% of the true value for the outer section. The activities reported by the participants for the inner section of the source were all within 20% of the true value, whilst those reported for the outer section were up to 83% different to the true value. CONCLUSIONS: A variety of calibration and segmentation methods were used by the participants for this exercise which demonstrated the variability of quantitative imaging across clinical sites. This paper presents a method to assess consistency between sites using different calibration and segmentation methods.

Three comparison exercises have been performed in 1996, 1999 and 2015 with 123I to assess the UK hospitals measurement capabilities using radionuclide calibrators for this particular radionuclide. The exercise performed in 1996 showed that only 62% of the participants could measure the solution to within 10% of the standardised value and only 28% could measure within 5% of the certificated value. The intercomparison exercise performed in 1999 showed no improvement in the measurement capability, with only 66% of the participants measuring to within 10% of the standardised value. The exercise performed in 2015 showed great improvement in the hospitals measurement capability, 94% of participants reported results within 10% of the certificated activity and 85% of the participants reported results within the 5% of the reported activity. The intercomparison exercises are an important way to identify possible measurement problems within the medical community. Additionally, the intercomparison exercises provide hospitals with traceability to national primary standards and improve measurement capability within the Nuclear Medicine community.
